You may be the most reliable, congenial and caring individual â€" but it don’t mean a thing if you don’t have that zing! By zing, I mean that magnetic power some people have to light up a room with their personality. Charisma. For a long time, we’ve known that prospects and referrers are drawn to people whom they find trustworthy, likable and caring. There’s an old adage: No one cares about what you know, until they know that you care. It’s true. People like other people who seem to care about them, as well as those who share the same values, goals and perspectives. For your current clients or employer, you want to project trustworthiness, likeability and caring. But TLC (trust, likability and caring) turns out to be necessary but not sufficient if you are building your business or career and need to really connect with people. A recent scientific finding proves charisma is more important than any other quality. This may explain the current presidential candidate polls, because charisma doesn’t equal telling the truth or appealing to people’s higher morals and values. It just means ….. what? What exactly is charisma, from a scientific point of view? Being fast with responses to questions, both general and specific. Appearing to be quick witted and able to almost effortlessly express your point of view is what magnetizes an audience to you. And, if you know my work, “audience” is the word I use for anyone or ten thousand anyones you’re speaking to. But, where does that leave those of us who need time to think before we speak? Is Halloween Candy Really a Treat So I hate to be the Grinch that ruins Halloween for the kiddos, but, as a health coach I feel morally obligated to speak up about the dangers of the impending holidays main feature: candy. Many adults are becoming more and more aware of just how harmful sugar is and its role in causing diseases. But while people are aware of and avoiding sugar in products such as candy, cookies and cakes, many are just learning exactly how much sugar is included in seemingly innocent grocery store items. Salad dressings, pasta sauce, bread, yogurt its in everything! Those trying to follow a low-fat or sugar-free diet are then tricked into eating items that have artificial poisonous sugars in them such as aspartame. And still others trying to eat healthy switch to stevia and agave nectar, but unfortunately those processed and refined products have the same affect on the body as plain old sugar. Now we have a yearly tradition of handing out sugary treats to kids who trust us with their lives. What are we actually doing? Handing them poison! Id say its not poison if its just a small amount, but if kids today are anything like I was, the more candy the better! And when mom and dad would hide it, it became a top priority to find the candy much like a drug addict looking for the lost stash, because thats indeed the same effect candy has on the brain. Now, I dont have kids of my own, and I can only imagine how hard it would be to sit them down for the talk that their candy supply is limited, but I know its a difficult conversation worth having. And Im sure that conversation will be appreciated, both in the short term when the kids dont stay up until all hours because of a sugar high, and in the long run come January/February when they are actually able to avoid coughs and colds unlike their sugar laden classmates. Still need a little convincing that kids eat a lot of sugar as it is?
